What a coating changes
A ceramic coating makes the surface strongly water-repellent. Drops bead up tight and roll off instead of spreading out and sitting there, so far less mineral gets left behind, and what does land sits on the coating rather than on the clear coat.
That is the honest mechanism. It does not make the car waterproof and it does not mean you can stop washing it. It means the water leaves before it dries, and when a spot does form it wipes off instead of etching in.
There is a second thing a coating does that the water-spotting story hides: it slows the fading and premature aging UV causes, which is what the Feynlab warranty is written against. What it will not do is take an impact. Stone off 199 is a paint protection film problem.
For a boat trailer or a tow vehicle that gets backed down a ramp, this is the single most useful thing you can do to the paint.
If the paint is already spotted
Coating over existing water etching seals the damage under the coating. We check the paint before quoting, and if there is etching we will tell you what correction it needs first and price that separately.
Some shops will coat straight over it because it looks fine for a fortnight. We would rather lose the job than do that.

Will a coating stop lake water spots completely?
No, and be wary of anyone who says it will. What it does is make water bead and run off before it evaporates, so far less mineral is left behind. When a spot does form, it sits on the coating rather than in the clear coat, which means it wipes off instead of needing polishing.
How often should I wash a coated vehicle that goes to the lake?
Less often than an uncoated one, but rinse it the same day after a trip if you can. Rinse it yourself or use a touchless bay. The brush washes at the marina end of town are what void coating warranties, and Feynlab says touchless for exactly that reason.
What if a spot has already etched into the paint?
Etching is a physical crater in the clear coat, so washing will not lift it. It needs machine polishing to level the surface, and then the coating goes on top of corrected paint. We quote correction separately and only where the paint actually needs it.
